My house alarm which has sensors on all windows and doors and is on a separate electric fuse sometimes goes off when a light switch is turned on. Any ideas what might be causing this

Welcome to the forum. When was the system last walk tested tested and full activation tested and battery checked? Is it a wired system or wireless system and what make is it?

And, have you been changing some of your lights for CLF low energy lamps?

Can't some CFL's give off IR (infra red) that affect the alarm detectors? Change the lamp(s) in that room to the old fashioned sort and see if that helps.

The problem may be caused by CFL's and "old style" wiring in sheathed singles. Large loop areas, and un-screened alarm cables are bad from an EMC perspective. 444.4.2.1 (iii) tries to address this issue.

You can easily demonstrate this effect with an a.m. radio and most 80's landing lighting circuits....

Holmleigh, if you have a (compact) fluorescent lamp on the circuit in question, try replacing it with an eco halogen lamp, or a proper tungsten lamp, if you can still get your hands on one, to see if that helps. If not, you probably need an EMC consultant rather than an electrician.
