Just got called to look at this one, E'ON have condemned the overheads to the property so the home owner has had to pay to have a new feed laid underground and new meter outside.

Request was can I re-connect the board to the new meter position.

Why has the homeowner had to pay for something that EON want doing???

Don't think I'd be reconnecting that lot though!

It'll probably be safe enough.....

cuz the property probably has appliances in keeping with the fuse box...

Wooden washers scrubbing board..

Hand powered pump to work the shower..

Gas lanterns in most rooms..

Coal fire..

Each of them fuses just goes to one 5amp round pin lug in each room!!!

Blushing:p

I love rewiring these old installs, never fails to amaze me some of the quality workmanship that went into them.

On a serious note though I dont think I'd be reenergising & putting my name to it.

Looks like the oringinal sparks has left a note hanging on the door to the left of shot........the paper has browned with age....

I'm not a 100% sure but I think its something to do with the fact that this house is in the middle of 4 fields at the end of the overhead line and its only from the boundary pole to the house about 25m. But I did not push to far as it looked like a raw point.

They are waiting for planning to stick a whole new floor on top of existing bungalow, but to be honest I'm not sure what to do for the bloke to get him going again. only a handful of those circuits are in use.

A few of these GuinnessGuinness might help with the thought process:^O

unless its a private supply from transformer, then id say DNO should be doing work FOC if it needs done for safety reasons

You jest about the age, but I did a CU change for a 1950's property with one of those boards, so that about dates it.

The one I did was all wired in steel conduit in singles. The owner did not want a rewire (they never do) just a new CU.

Remarkably, everything tested okay so I just updated the bonding and fitted a new CU. No problems with RCD's tripping. I should add this property was wired in PVC so maybee that dates it a bit later than 1950's

In your case, since he's doubling the size or the property the only sensible option is a full rewire when the building work is done.

To "get him going" I would fit a temporary 2 way CU and feed the whole of that board from a 32A MCB with RCD protection. Assuming of course you can get the RCD to stay in. Put lots of disclaimers about the state of the installation on the EIC.

Like others I don't see why the DNO is making him pay. Maybee it's because he wants the supply uprated for the building work? What's the rating of the DNO's fuse?

I've known many cases up here where the overhead feed needs updating on safety grounds, and they always replace with another overhead feed. Did the customer specifically request an underground feed? that could explain why he has to pay. Perhaps the overhead feed would be in the way for the building work so he just wants it undergrounded?

Perhaps he just thought he could swing it and get it undergrounded for free as a safety issue, but was scuppered when they told him they would replace it with a new overhead feed, so he had to stump up the cash for an underground feed.
