I have a problem where if I turn off my light switch on one side of the room, it turns off anything plugged into the electrical outlet on the other side of the room. For some reason, they originally wired that outlet on the same circuit as the light switch. I would like to wire the outlet so that it does not switch off whenever you switch off the light on the opposite wall.

How do I go about doing that? Thanks.

(p.s. There are just the basic three wires in the electrical outlet; black/white/bare copper ground).

It sounds to me like a 5amp lighting circuit, the electrical outlet is for a standing or table lamp and not for general power requirements. Also the colours of the wires are a little suspect, I take it you are from the UK?

+1, sounds like USA colours, and a socket intended for a table lamp.

Over here, if we do that, then we fit a smaller 5 amp round pin socket for plug in lighting, rather than the standard square pin 13A socket for general use.

Oh, I didn't realize it was a UK forum. I'm in Canada. But we're just Brits without the accent, really. And don't worry anything about electrical codes, we have none over here. We're just a small developing country... Though we are talking about 120v outlets here. Really not sure about the amperage of this outlet, as I'm not sure how to measure the amps with my multimeter.

I never considered this, but you may be right that the outlet was designed only for lighting, and not general use. But I can't just plug in a square pin/round pin whatever, because I don't think that exists here.
