can someone please explain how you would test the insulation resitance of a newly installed shower. is the cable disconected from the shower itself? how do you get around the problem of the neon in the isolator,

(just learning)

thanxs

Yes disconnect the shower you are testing the cable feeding the shower and not the actual shower;)

1/Test cables before you connect up the shower unit itself.

2/

Fit a proper shower switch..

where the neon is removed when the cover is taken off,

but the switch & circuit remains intact for continuity tests!

such as:-

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/90597/Electrical-Supplies/Switches-Sockets/White-Moulded/Crabtree-Range/Crabtree-50A-Pullcord-Sw-Neon

all other "poxy square" switched are more hassle then they are worth.. :( :C

couple more quid for a crabtree one saves time later on testing! :) :D
50 amp as well, nice

so if you had to test a lighting circuit with flurescent lights. how would you do the whole circuit as these have to be disconnected. a little confused. also on the shower is you couldnt disconnect the neon would you test from the isolator to the shower then from the isolator to the consumer.

You would have to disconnect the lights:_| (chock block the feeds)

You don't want to be putting 500V through a modern shower so disconnect the cable from the shower and 'chock block' the cable across the pull switch which will remove the neon

i would join L and N together and test to earth

Inspection and Testing should be conducted throughout, so the logical thing to do is to test it before you connect vulnerable devices!
