probably easier to just leave the cover off

It doesn't really show in that pic but the plastic is going yellow from heat on the top. We now do all the refits for this  high street chain of shops, this one was done before us. They always have a 'last man out switch' by the front door for all the non-essential electrics that these relays are for . We wire a 4 pole contactor in a metal box on 3 phase or on a  single phase, a double pole contactor to a second consumer unit.

I would like to know what those 12 Merlin Gerin contactors/relays cost (plus the work involved) and if their spec allows  grouping  12 in one enclosure

worked on a few similar setups before. on one of them, they wanted the key switch changed to a normal switch. right next to the door. i think shop is still empty, but someone could have fun with that, just hit switch and watch the chaos

It is generically known as the finger test
The test finger is a different item with a joint so it is passed through and twisted to see if it touches anything.

How big is the British standard finger these days?

The spark was probably worried that the ambient temperature would affect the current carrying capacity of the cables and it was a sort of spur of the moment thought - why not drill 30 or 40 holes in the top of the CU to cool the cables down sort of thing....
