............. the many unsung heroes in the background .

The picture below is by what is now the Jaguar Plant in Birmingham , called Spitfire Island .  Thousands were built here , pushed across the main road onto the airfield for test flights before despatch to the RAF .

Another time ..another generation .

We should never forget the ultimate sacrifice that so many people lost their lives at such a young age, and those who were injured, or those who served and then lived with the memories for the rest of their lives.

I went to see someone the other day who was a glider pilot,,,, from the sounds of things he is very lucky to be here,,, he said that of the 2000 odd pilots that started out that <100 survived  :Salute

We don't know we're born sometimes .  We have much to thank the generation of the 1940's for their guts and determination ...I fear we won't see their like again .

People talk about getting rid of stuff like Trident etc.

Look at it this way .    When the oppressor marches into your country & you're not strong enough to defend yourself , all is lost .

No European country was strong enough to defend itself against the Nazis , including Britain .    They all sat back & watched Germany re-arm and were powerless against them.  The British Army was decimated after Dunkirk, the country was bankrupt & without American  intervention , I hate to say it , but we would be goosestepping to work every day & driving german cars   .( well the last bit came to pass)

In fact most of us wouldn't have even been born .      The history of the world is made up of battles , killing , slaughter, invasions, power struggles , despots , meglamaniacs , religious  nutters imposing their crackpot beliefs onto others .

Just like the school yard , the weak are picked on & bullied , they don't pick on the big kid because thats his deterrant ,  Who in their right mind would invade the U.S ?

The presence of one British nuclear submarine by the Falklands kept the Argentine Navy in harbour .

Just  rambling again .

Deke,

You may have been taught a very twisted version of events, a lot of what happened in WWII was directly devolved from WWI

I take it school never taught you about the 'BALFOUR AGREEMENT' ?

I haven't met an Englishperson yet that was taught that at school, it's something the English and USA governments would rather keep buried I suspect.

Not heard of the Balfour Agreement either steps, I am away to look it up now.

This is a day that brings a tear to my eye when we remember the death, hardship and suffering of those who get entangled in conflict.

My Father, who passed away six years ago, was born in 1926.

As soon as he was old enough he joined the Navy and spent his time as a Ships Telegrapher on a Motor Torpedo Boat patroling the Channel. When you work out the dates it is truly frightening!....and there are 16 /17 year olds today who consider it a days work to get out of bed and sign on!

.....and still,it goes on. Walking the granddaughters in the park, the other day and three more names have been added to the Memorial.

All,three names are inlaid in shiny brass...all,the others have faded over the decades.....but NOT the memory or the sacrifices made.

We must NEVER forget

As you say Kerch,  if we forget  ..we  re-live it  .

My Dad was Navy ....did about 12 years on capital ships ,  Renown , Repulse, Hood  etc. Came out just before WW2 started & was hoisted straight back for another 5 years .

Stepps I know our education system is choosey as to what it teaches ...I will have to look up the Balfour Agreement .   I understand that Germany was held in a stranglehold after WW1 but I'll get back to you on that .

English secondary education in my time was to train factory fodder , & the basic trades , so Maths , English , Tech. Drawing & Metalwork.  You wont need a language because everyone speaks English .  If country is at war then supply cannon fodder.    All officers will be from public schools.

History :

WW1  & WW2    Never happened !!

British occupation of India    ( Never happened)

Lost the trust of our settlers in the new colony of America   ...Never happened!!

A load of gangsters called themselves Kings & carved up the country between them.

Alfred the Great.... .burnt some cakes.  Thats it .

A Scottish bloke sat in a cave watching a spider rebuild his web ...this prompted him to attack the English again.

Another guy tried to turn the tides back .  Sounds like a right Canute

Thruthelthroth the Unready  was never quite ready  for something.

This sceptred Isle was never invaded.

The Saxons invaded.

The Danes invaded.

The Vikings Invaded.

The Romans Iinvaded.

The Normans invaded.

you blaming the Zionists for WW2 then Steps?

I actually studied the Arab-Isreali conflict for my History 'O' level, it was the best part of it being generally 'up to date' and not something that happened centuries ago. I have continued to have a deep interest in history, and generally there are few very clear cut rights or wrongs in causation of wars. Just the general desire of some people to be 'top dog' / rule the world / make money / create an empire etc etc.

Watching Corbyn sing the national anthem was definetly painful. Likewise I attended a funeral of my not so old neighbour last weekend, singing hymns glorifying a god I don't believe in grates with me. But they were sung anyway in memory of Jennifer who chose and coordinated the whole service.

No binky,

I'm.not blaming zionists for WWII

but, a lot of hitters hatred was I believe bred from the consequences of The Balfour Agreement,

It does go a lot deeper than that though,

I'm.not going to get into the argument of the FACT that what is now know as israel was promised to the Arabs long before it was promised to the zionists.

The fact you studied Arab - 'israeli' history by its very fact makes it post WW so is pretty much irrelevant imo,  it's what happened prior is what matters.

Personally, I'm glad someone in the Labour party bollocked / kicked Corbyns ass, while not being a Labour supporter (as you may have noticed) I still admire the fact that at least today he (perhaps under duress) honoured our war dead.

I wear a H4H band, and also an Afghan Heroes band,  doesn't mean I support the conflict, simply that I support the men protecting my freedom to have the opinions I have.

while not being a Labour supporter (as you may have noticed)
never would have guessed :slap

my history course did cover the preludes to the formation of the Israeli state. As for the jews, they have alwsy been a target, something to do with Jesus kicking the monet lenders out of the synagogue making money lending a 'dirty profession' in the eyes of christianity and one of the few career options open to them. Plus money is relatively easy to move when you get persecuted i  whatever adopted country you live in.

The division of palestine and the middle east in general after defeating the Ottoman Empire, classic empire meddling in other peoples affairs.

Anyway, today isn't for arguing, it is for remembering the brave :Salute

Binky,

I was reading your post with the intention of replying in the same manner,

Let's not hijack Dekes post with our own views on the situation, and let us just together remember the fallen, on every side,

War is not made by man, it is made by government,

Lest We Forget.   :Salute

WW11 was a DIRECT result of the treaty of Versailles. Google "occupation of the Ruhr" The slimy french like to keep very quiet about the FACT that they invaded germany in 1925 or thereabouts. This gave rise to the "inflation" that they DID tell you about in school. Nobody told you the reason for it though did they!!!!

Anyway, the rise of Hitler came about as he promised to give the german people back their "self respect"...

When 14 years after THEIR invasion, the french got completely overrun by german forces in a matter of a few weeks, they were not such good sports about it... Oh dear how sad....

Not saying for one second WW11 was a good idea, but it taught the slimy french a thing or two...

john...

The French (rather foolishly) felt that by building The Maginot line so the Germans simply drove through Belgium to avoid it!

Oh, and should i point out that the entire royal family are German with a false name. "Windsor" is nothing more than a town near Slough Proper name is Saxe-Coburg.. Oh, and the national anthem is German too with different words. The original words instead of God save our gracious blah blah, were Heil Dir im siegerkranz which so far as i know, [my german is not great] means "hail to you in the winners crown"

Still doesn't excuse the fact of hijacking Dekes original thread about remembering our fallen which I thought the two greatest protagonists had refrained from.

( myself and Binky)

I echo the above post which supports our troops .....whatever the politics behind the conflict .

My feelings about war changed forever when , years ago , I learned that 6000 British troops died  on the FIRST DAY of the Battle of the Somme.

I'm a supporter of keeping our noses out of other people's conflicts but I think its now time for  combined action against the  madmen  , murdering in the name of their God .     I'm thinking a combined European, US & Russian force .

No no, It was much worse than that.. By the end of the first day SIXTY THOUSAND had been killed. Of these 20,000 were killed in the first hour...

Nobody wins in wars, there are only losers. I cannot believe that the two most powerful countries on earth at that time, england and germany spent 6 long years killing each other. Think what they could have done had they co-operated for 6 years. No matter the rights and wrongs, the soldiers on all sides were ALL heroes that were merely serving their countries. Any blame lies firmly with the politicians and royalty that orchestrated it all.

This by the way, is why the 1920 firearms act was brought in, to disarm the population... Why???? Because those that served in the trenches of WW1 were promised a "land fit for heroes" Never happened though, so those that caused it all were terrified that there would be a revolution... So, Firearms act..

One of the biggest regrets of my life is that, when i was about 7, i met my grandads brother, He had half of his face shot away at the somme, but i never spoke to him about it. A seven year old knows nothing of war... It would have been so interesting to hear first hand how it was. To late now, they are all gone now. I have his photo here. If i knew how to post it on here i would.
