A good friend has fetched me his laptop today to fix. Basically the lights are out but there is somebody home (doesn't sound right, but it's true) Tha LCD backlight isn't working. I suspect its the inverter as he had the screen replace 6 months ago. How would one test with a multimeter? Looked on net and loads of posts from people who haven't got a clue trying to test frequency (not saying this is wrong, but they sound like numpties and haven't got a clue what they are doing). I'm just thinking test Volts. My meter goes up to 1000v anyway and I believe these kick out about 700.

Any pointers before I dive in in the morning when you lot are tucked up in bed ;)

Has it actually failed or is it just turned off in the software?

Can you get into the BIOS & if so, is the screen visible there?

Yes, can get in BIOS and no there is no option. He said it was flickering a bit before hand and then stopped working. It's either ccfl or inverter. Just not got any spares to test. Inverters are only

You know I'd do anything for you sir. Although I've never even touched a fruity pc so errrr I guess I dont do them. lol

So the screen is illuminated in the bios or not?
Not, but you can see the screen if you shine a torch on it. The image is there but no light.

I already have it stripped down and the inverter out. Canoe, I've already read them mate, the last 2 one uses spare bulb / inverter to test (which I haven't got) other uses meter set on frequency and doesn't seem to have a clue. Which is why I'm here checking ;)
