Lectrurer asks, what is a good insulator, nice African sticks hand up and says 'water', should he be on our course?

actually water is an insulator its not a good conductor of electricioty in its true form its only the chemicals and metals added/present in water h2O that make it a conductor ;) :p

Badger is right, as is the chap in the OP. Pure water is an insulator. Have you seen the pics of the TV working underwater?

Then there is SL's great experiment where his experiment went to disprove the hypothesis that water is an insulator.

After a thorough literature review the best we can say it - it depends.

Have had big arguments about this; PURE water; no salts, no electrolyte;

BUT look out for the Hydronium Ion. This used to be called the Hydroxonium

ion and is a water molecule with a hydrogen ion added, H(+) which turns even

pure water into a weak electrolyte.

Well he is correct for your information, pure water is an insulator it is only the salts and impurities in it make it a conductor, so should you be on the course before you start making comments like this:red card

I would say H2O is a good insulator and water is not.

What I would be more concerned about is that your lecturer didn't explain this to you.
