I have some LED lights in a glazed kitchen cupboard that were fitted 9 years ago as part of a kitchen supplied by Homebase. The lights have started cutting out some 20 minutes or so after being switched on but if switched off they will then come back on again for another 20 minutes before cutting out again. Is this a sign that the driver needs to be replaced?

Many thanks.

Thanks Andy and Murdoch for your replies. The driver sits on top of the cabinet and gets plenty of air around it. After the lights cut off I felt it and it was hot but not so hot you couldn't hold on to it. Do you know of any reputable mail order suppliers I can get a replacement from?

With LED drivers, its extremely important to replace like for like ....... so google is your friend ...or a major online retailer

not always... if the current one doesnt work because its undersized, then replacing like for like wont solve the problem. but it could also not be working because its faulty in which case a like for like replacement will be fine... really,  you need to know why its failed and not working before deciding how to fix the problem

The OP did say its worked for 9 years so the sizing should be ok .............

Having said that 9 years for some of this stuff is pretty good

and ho often have we been to a job where it wored for x years then suddenly stopped working... then discover its because the lamps were replaced with ones that use slightly more power? not saying thats the case here, but you never know

Thanks again. The lights and driver are the originals and were supplied together as a package. I have a photo of the driver specs that I have tried to attach but apparently I can only do that after 10 posts! Some thank you posts coming up so that I can then add it!

Thanks.

Thanks.

Good picture.

Google the SLT number and the suppliers will appear.

If you go ahead with the change, make 100% sure you connect the 220v to the 220v .............

That's a constant current type driver.

Which means the lamps are connected in series, (Christmas tree light style)

Which means if one lamp has failed/or failing they probably all go out.

could be a faulty lamp. measure voltage accross the output terminals when its switched on but lights have gone off. no voltage its the driver. voltage and its a lamp

I don't have a means of measuring voltage. Could I leave one of the lamps unplugged at a time to see if the fault only occurs with one of them?

You can short them out, one at a time,. If shorting one brings the other three on, replace the one you shorted.

If you don't want to mess around and have no test gear the easy solution is to buy four new lamps and then if the fault persists get a new driver. None of its particularly expensive.

Alternatively you can buy a prewired kit and replace the lot to remove any parts matching doubts.

Many thanks to all for your responses. I have decided to order a couple of lamps that includes a new driver with it. If I get nine years out of those like the last set then I'll be happy.

Cheers.
