Lighting in a fireplace

I've been asked by a customer about lighting within his fireplace. There is a wood burning stove in situ that is used, with metal flue passing up through metal register plate. Currently there are pygmy lamp fittings in the alcoves (shelves) on either side of the fireplace. He's thinking of replacing these with LED strips - I need ideas (if it's possible) of what I can do within the fireplace?
