Half nine this morning, I've been asleep for about 3 hours, don't ask, anyway the phone goes and it's one of the lads, he's doing a job on a hairdressing salon in the middle of town and he's hit a cable, will I help?
I head down there and there is absolutely nothing to suggest there would be any cables in the area where he's drilling,I check everything and find out he's actually hit 2 cables, both feeding water heaters. He had hit one and not realised because it was on the load side of an isolator, which was off at the time, he only realised he'd hit something when he hit one on the feed side and there was a bang.
I managed to replace 2 damaged sections and as a precaution I did the joints in surface mounted boxes, over the run of cables, there were actually 4 cables. He was a bit fed up, but I said it was lucky he'd hit a live one, if he hadn't he'd have carried on oblivious to the damage, they'd only have discovered it tomorrow when the water heaters didn't work, this would have meant undoing what he'd done while we fixed the cables, plus there would have been a loss of trade while the repairs were carried out. When I put it too him that way he didn't feel as bad,I have however advised him to buy a cable detector for the future.
