can I just make a quick post in relation to the other post on here about courses

if you intend installing solar PV and you want your customers to get the benefit from both feed in tariffs (FITs) and generation tariffs,

then you MUST be MCS accredited,

AFAIAA this is NOT C&G

I repeat,

MCS is not the same as C&G

and is in fact a totally different thing.

please if anyone knows different post it here, but if you are paying for a course at the moment then do not pay for a C&G one as it is a waste of money unless it also gives you MCS,

you need MCS to install solar PV

you do NOT need C&G, in fact it is worthless

Edit, Im on the beer and G&G looks like C&G

MCS = Microgeneration Certification SchemeC&G = City & Guilds I know what that means I meant G & G :D

Think he covered that in the "or if your otherwise drinking gity & guiltless" part ;)

May I add, you only need mcs for your customers to gain the feed in tarrif you don't' have to do any courses just pass your mcs assessment!

There are many 3 day courses around 500quid to help you grasp the pv concept , there is also the c+g course. So I wouldn't call it useless I'd call it very useful if you want to get into this field and need more knowledge. As for the difference between these 2 courses I do not know.

Hi Guys

May be I may be able to clarify. I'm a PV installer and MCS accredited and I constantly come across this question over a coffee in the wholesalers.

The question over C&G OR equivalent qualification is relevant to being a installer. The NICEIC run their own course which is not C&G but is recognised as a relevant qualification. No qualification no matter who from permits the holder to then automatically gain MCS.

MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the watchdog to the industry and is in no way connected to any qualification. The scheme is set up to prevent the "cowboy" industry. It is extremely stringent and not straight forward to join. It is a mine field of paper work and regulations. MCS does require the operatives to be suitably qualified, trained and instructed in ALL aspects from H&S to product awareness.

For a installation to qualify for FITS payments then the installation MUST be installed by a MCS accredited installer and be MCS accredited products. In no other manner will a system qualify ever.

So to clarify to become an installer of PV and for the end user to gain the FITS payments the installer must have a relevant qualification (C&G, NIC etc), have current health & safety training and qualifications and be MCS accredited installer.

I/we install PV and have seen a big up take in leads since the FITS came into force this year. It is certainly a growing industry and the regulations are there to keep out the cowboy's which I agree with.

Hope this helps

Mark
