I was in your position and decided to upgrade the consumer unit. For both safety (RCD protection) and convenience (trip switches rather than re-wire-able fuses).

Would be nice to get a bit of RCD protection on sockets so you can safely use things outside. Generally an old board like that would be thrown in the skip so I would not have a lid for it.

 
That certainly is an old design of board, lacking some safety features found in modern boards. Also from your picture I cannot see any last inspection date sticker. If your electrical installation has not been inspected & tested during the past 10 years it may be wise to organise a formal inspection to check for any defects.
