Have just come across a job where a customer has moved into a flat where the supply is shared from a single meter with three other flats. They want a separate meter installed, and the supplier has asked for them to have tails fitted so they can install the new meter.

I'm thinking of putting the old and new tails into a henley block and terminating the new ones temporarily so the meter can be added later, when the supply is changed over. Any other alternative would involve installing the new tails when the supplier fits the meter? What would you terminate the ends of the new tails into? I don't think you can get terminal blocks big enough for a 25mm tail?

Would you provide a minor certificate for this work, or does it need a full installation certificate because the supply is changing.

I'm thinking the minor.

Cheers.

Supplier will require a Consumer Unit or Switch fuse suppling Sub Main on the end of Meter Tails before they connect them into a Meter.

Most also now require an EIC for the installation prior to connection.

:)

Could I put the new tails via a new external isolator and just put tape on the ends of the tails with a label saying do not turn new main switch on until connected to supply? I'd worry about the risk of the instruction being ignored, especially the new tails would not be via an MCB/RCD.

e.g.

Before:

CCU-------> existing sub main ---> second CCU -- > existing meter

After me, before new meter:

CCU-------> existing sub main ---> second CCU --> existing meter

|

new tails ---> seperate DP isolator --> new tails (not terminated)

After new meter:

CCU-------> existing sub main ---> Disonnected from supply by supplier

|

new tails ---> seperate DP isolator --> new tails ---> new meter

If they require a full EIC then I;d have to put a new CCU in? - headbang

It would be foolish to leave anything potentially dangerous.

I always arrange to be on site on the day to change over if required.

You say that the Flat supply that requires a seperate Meter is at the moment supplied in parrellel with other Flats from a common Meter.

So I take it you have one set of tails out of existing Meter going into Henley terminal block(s) at the moment, and then several sets of tails from there feeding the Flat supplies.

If that is so all you will need to do is remove the set of tails that require NEW meter out of this Henley block and if long enough Metering will connect these into new Meter. If not then you will have to provide ANOTHER Henley type double pole connection unit to extend tails to NEW meter.

OR in advance replace Meter tails feeding your Sub main Switch fuse with new ones that will be long enough to reach the NEW Meter position and just loop them back into Existing Henley block to maintain supply.
