whats with some drivers using the middle lane, even when there is nothing in lane 1?

had a bit fun with 1 of them today on the M6. 1x car in middle going about 65. so i overtake in lane 3, then return to lane 1 and slow down a bit til they pass. then overtake in lane 3. repeat. they passed me 3 times before catching upto traffic ahead....

M40 from Oxford to M25 is the one i notice it on

what a waste of money making it 3 lanes !!!!!!!

And these middle lane drivers are the ones that dont look when joining from a slip road :_|

Some drivers eh!!

I watched the "Police Camera" programme the other night , they were concentrating on mobile phone use while driving , one of my pet hates TBH , everywhere you look in this area , drivers are doing it..

One guy and a young girl drive about texting at the same time , totally oblivious to the fact that they are looking down for ages .

That mobile has a hypnotic effect on some people , must text this stupid comment to all my mates while I'm bowling along the M6 at 70 MPH .

One day they'll murder someone's family , 'cos thats what it is , murder.

personally I just drive down lane one and pass them,

heard a good arguement for this a while back,

apparently you are not 'under' taking,

the person in lane 2 is in the wrong lane.!

you are merely maintaining your speed, and doing it in the correct lane,.

I sometimes sit in the middle if the LH lane is busy and I am going even slightly faster than the LH lane. If there is slow traffic up ahead or I am in an area with lots of junctions ie on and off exits and traffic joining. This is a good idea since most traffic joining motorways dont understand the notion of the 'accelleration lane' where you are supposed to match the road speed and slot in where you can. Instead they think its their God given right to just barge in and make you slow down or accellerate to make room. So yes I am a centre lane hogger at times but only because I find constant lane changing unneccesary and an increased risk. RH lane hoggers are the real PITA IUAM.

If you look at the lane 1 on many of our motorways, you will see that all those 000,000s of lorries have worn two very slight 'grooves' into the tarmac. If you drive a car with low profile tyres and sports suspension there's a good chance your car will 'track' these grooves. My Saab 9-3 Aero with it's 235/45 tyres does this. It makes for an uncomfortable ride sometimes, so i tend to stick to lane 2.

Anyway, there's nowt wrong with using lane 2, provided you're not holding anyone else up. As long as there's another free lane or you move over as necessary.

Your antics seem juvenile to me. Simply not necessary. Just carry on with your journey. You're not the "middle lane police".

quite often, cars have to queue to get into lane 3 to pass them. so at times, they are holding up others.

you tell him PC,

if I were you Id refuse to pay my road tax until they fix it,

its not as if you'd be breaking the law is it?

oh, sorry, it would be, just the same as driving in lane 2 if lane one is empty, just cos you bought a car that isnt fit for purpose, ie, driving on the 'great' British roads.... :slap

the fact your car isnt capable of driving on a particular bit of road doesnt give you the right to go against the guidance of the highway code,

my brakes are a bit ropey, Im not going to bother slowing down at give way signs either then.

Ah yes, that esteemed body of people known collectively as 'The Middle Lane Owners' Club'...usually noticed by their white knuckles gripping the top of the wheel like Mr Glitter pushing a Pram through Mothercare; or wearing a Trilby [or any headwear], nagging partner in passenger seat, I slow down for to$$ers sticker on the bumper, Caravan Club Badge, Daewoo owner, I've Visited the Keswick Rope / Pencil museum window stickers. Yes, you have guessed correctly that I do quite a lot of Motorway Driving..........rant finishes............ :coat

I think that we should have a 60 lane a 70 lane and 80 lane, just get in the lane with the speed limit you want to travel at. would save loads of crashes caused bu overtaking
I'd much prefer a 90 lane:innocent

Then I can go faster than all of the other silly twits and keep out of trouble!

In the Village down the road from me they're all 90 FFS. They don't park the car, they just drift to the place where they wish to abandon said vehicle! Trouble is that most of them cannot see over the steering wheel, they just look through the gap twixt steering wheel and dashboard.......... :coat

This is one of my pet gripes, but the standard of driving on our motorways is shockingly bad even from the so called 'professional' lorry and coach drivers. The number of them that follow far far too close, swerve randomly into the wrong lane (even when no wind), try to overtake when going uphill when there is no hope in hell of getting past but try anyway and block large sections of the 2 lane A1. YOU ARE LIMITED TO THE SAME SPEED FFS!

The vast majority of people really do not understand what sort of separation distance you need at 70 or 80 miles per hour. You can drive along a quiet motorway in lane 1 and idiots pull in 5 meters in front of you so you either show down or pull out into lane 2 until they speed up away or you crawl past 2 mph faster. Some kind of camera to fine people

I occasionally do late night / early morning runs down the M4. Not a vehicle in sight, and there`s a plonker in the middle doing 65.

Now - I`ll hold up my hand; I`m probably doing about 80, if the weather is good; and I`d be in the inside lane.

When I`m quite close, I`ll indicate, nip straight past him to the outside, and and all the way back into the inside lane again. Approx 50% get the idea, the other 50% probably didn`t realise I was ever there!

And what happened to common courtesy - even from the HGV guys. You flash `em in (or out) ; most times you get ignored. Ignorant gits. No need for it.

I hate idiots that come up behind you on a packed motorway flashing there lights like they own the road you are doing 80mph and they still want to go that bit faster.
