hi before commencing with minor works, you should check main bonding and also that the earthing arrangement is adaquate could this be simply doing a zs at a socket to prove an earth path or would this require a ze.

cheers

I cannot see how performing either of those would prove that bonding is in place to Gas or Water service pipes? A Zs at a socket could be going down a parallel service pipe path so would not confirm earth connection, but a Ze (bonding disconnected) would show if the earth connection is within typical values for earthing arrangement.

hi thanks for reply sorry i didnt mean doing a zs would check the bonding just confirming an earth path. i just wasnt sure that a ze would be performed on a minor works cheers

I think in the real world you will ***** what tests are appropriate for sufficient information to verify the condition of existing installation and that your alterations are safe and comply with current regs. On domestic installations taking a Ze may be less than 5 minutes work, on a commercial application it may not be realistically practical to isolate an installation to take a Ze. As with many issues in the electrical world there is no one simple quick answer to all situations.

excellent answer thank you sorry i was referring to domestic, as the sparks i work with never do a ze on minor works, just a zs on completion of alterations. however while i have been reading the books its states to check earthing arrangements prior to work commencing therefore i would have thought a ze and to check bonding or is ze an overkill in these circumstances

i always do ze, ka on any work i do and i note n a minor works or eic where neccessary, wether changing a light fitting, or replacing or adding wiring points etc, cover your ar$e is how i think :) like today, emergency fault on light circuit, et to job, find that there is a dead short across live and earth (light bulbs removed) start in lounge and find all wiring ok except 1 cable, go upstairs in to loft a disconnect feed in clears fault on cable in lounge, start removing cables out of upstairs pendants, fault seems to go in to other loft, near bathroom, open other loft space up, trace fault to bathroom shaver. mirror cabinet, disconnect cable to cabinet, and start reconnecting pendants still testing to make sure all clear, i tested the zs of circuit r1r2 of circuit and also incoming ze and ka, now hands up if any of you would have doone that testing to confirm correct connections that youd remade and also issued a cert with those results on, (c/u is crabtree starbreaker, installed jan 08 16th edition, in my opinion id rather spend half an hour checking with meters that i paid loads of money for to do a job, that the circuit is safe when i leave the property knowing that anything happens and that circuit is correctly connected, (oh and lounge light is metal no earth attached to wiring so did that aswell when i refitted the light fitting) ;)

thank you it makes sence to take a ze reading after reading comments.
