It is just they [the 4x4 drivers] are a load of morons] [apart from me in mine!] I can tell you that when in 4wd all is great when going uphill, downhill is much worse because all wheel locked together. Throttle affects all of them.. There you are tootling downhill, back off the throttle a bit and all 4 wheels slide, all the abs in the world cannot help you, prang waiting to happen....... When going downhill i take it out of 4wd if it looks slippy....

john...

I once watched a landrover very slowly slide down the hill into a parked car on a snowy day.

So how does only 2 wheel drive help in a skid John?
it doesnt,

but it does help people that cant drive 4WD very well,

do you think the guys that do green lanes and cross country constantly go around turning off 4WD.?

a lot of it is down to having a proper 4WD vehicle in the first place,

most of the soft-roaders are 2 WD drive only. Good thing about modern cars is that they are nearly all front wheel drive, which definetly helps.

I've taken to fitting the vans with quite chunky tread Firestone tyres, we spend quite a bit of time down contry lanes in winter. A tyre that can cope with mud on the road really helps.
