I have done a consumer unit change on one of these units was not a problem and used a Wylex skeleton unit. I would treat isolation of supply as any other consumer unit change so should not be a problem.

I can change it without any problem. The problem is supply cables and mantel unit have to be moved. At least supply cable.

Normally that would be true, but as this set up was designed for inclusion of the Consumer Unit then I think you will find it is not considered to be an External Meter box but can be treated as any internal cupboard where a Meter is installed. If you are keeping the CU in that position then why do you need DNO to move Tails?

Just wait untill credit runs out on that Meter and supply will be disconnected to allow safe replacement of the CU. ;)
Just make sure the emergency credit has also been used up as well, just in case you press the credit button by accident!

Hi ASDF,

any chance you could take a photo of the inside of box when back on the job?

I have possibly got a similar board to change but have never come across one of these before.

That looks different to the Mantel box that i know of, looks as if there is far more room in the CU area of the box.

Also looks as if it's already been modified to some extent too, with the inclusion of that RCD main switch. You would never have been able to fit that main switch in the Mantel box that i changed the CU skeleton in.

Batty,

As far as i know, Crabtree won the contract to produce the split load CU skeleton frames for these council house Mantel boxes ....so unless Wylex as since produced a similar fitting frame, Crabtree were the only ones to produce them. very lucrative for them i would imagine too, going by the amount of council houses that were fitted with these Mantel box arrangements.

But i'm way out of date with the going's on in UK these day's ....Not surprised anymore, with anything that happens within our industry there now, ....They sure seem to have made a complete pig's ear of the supply companies, since the demise of the old leccy boards ...lol!!!

Down to the government after all the cock eveything else up so its no suprise they C***** this up too. I know things are getting more expensive but any fuel these days is day like robbery and in the old days there was no VAT on house fuels but that has changed with a low rate but we still have to pay it. The biggest con is the insurance tax what right has a government got to tax you for having insurance.

Robin spark, Your picture is of a 'Standard' range Wylex consumer unit that has been flush mounted. Its 'guts' are identical though to whats used in a Mantle unit.

That a standard, Wylex 'Standard' range consumer unit with RCD main switch. These first appeared around the late 80's & although you could buy them most places, were normally seen only in council properties. The guts of the metalclad standard range were the skeleton frames.

S&S,

Had no idea they were still using the Mantel type boxes into the late 80's. Tell me, ...are they Still using similar arrangements to-day in council properties???

Looks as if they increased the CU area allocated in those metal boxes, damn well needed it too, There sure weren't that amount of room in the mantel boxes being installed in the 50's....
