Hi guys,

I have come across a fuse box which needs changing and upgrading, this is above the cooker and I need to move it. Firstly, I needed to know how far away it needs to be from the cooker according to the 17th Edition. Secondly what do you think would be the best way or thing to do to extend and run the cables over?

I am going to notify the local authority and they will be coming to inspect after the first fixing.

Any help would be appreciated!

The minimum distance for a "socket outlet" is 300mm from edge of cooker.

So I guess you would have to move it at least that far to one side.

Adaptable boxes are great for extending cables, crimp jointed through or I sometimes use wago connectors. With this kind of work there is not really a first fix, it has to be done so you can re connect all services, otherwise you get a claim for frozen food destroyed and prize marine fish killed. Be carefull with over the cooker future cooker hood installation could be a nightmare.

there is no minimum distance, but good practice is at least 300mm away.

ideally, all cables should be taken back to ceiling/floor, moved along and then to moved unit.

can u propose that some of the kitchen ceiling be removed for a better DB position and a better job.

The cables may even be routed such that they may even reach a better position

The distribution board must be acessable under the 17th ed, so dont put it at ceiling level as the inspector may ask for it to be moved (and you will end up doing the job twice). There is no minimum distance but to stop heat damage I would not put it nearer than 1 M. It comes under Prevention of mutual detrimental influences, sub section "proximity of non-electrical services and other influences. Hope this helps

sorry I didn't mean putting it in the ceiling, I just meant if the cables go through the ceiling void (if there is one) seeing which way most of the cables go originally, most of the cables may not need extending.
