Electrician
We've had a really cr*p year at Pink and Blue Electrics. We aren't getting enough work for the two of us - but OK for one.
Result is I've been applying for jobs so we can keep afloat.
Good news is that I've passed one interview and had a medical - apparently I've got the lungs of a 20 year old and the hearing of a 60 year old - and am down to the final 3 on another engineering job. With a bit of luck I'll have the choice of 2 jobs!
Strange. Engineering is in a depressed state down here - and when I was looking for jobs before going down the electrician route I didn't make the cut. Now I suddenly seem to be in demand. The firms I've been interviewed by have brilliant order books and are in for the long term.
Just a few of thoughts:-
I've never felt so relaxed in interviews before. As a domestic electrician you have to deal with so many customers that you learn to put people at ease. Engineering can be a bit solitary and you mainly associate with like minded geeks! Being an electrician makes you far more rounded!
I think that being an electrician demonstrates a practical ability that is obvious to HR people and being self employed - even if it isn't going well - shows a work ethic.
As a 53 year old in a place where loads of engineers have been laid off I really thought I didn't stand a chance of getting back into engineering - especially after a few years out of the loop. I'm pleasantly surprised. Overall don't underestimate how much being an electrician on a forum like this helps!
I'll still be part of Pink and Blue Electrics - and will stay on the forum - love this place - but possibly not as active as before.
Thanks all!
