Hello all,

Currently I am a certified automated gate installer, and service tech. I have been doing this for 3 years, Prior to that i worked with my dad an electrician and was a Paramedic for 5 years, and now work for the largest gate company in the United States of America, southern California. My job includes: Tie in and final termination of voltage range from single phase 120 to 3 phase 480, Stick, or shielded metal arc welding, communications wiring, security systems, cameras, server setup, hydraulics, and much more.

As you guessed I don't currently live in the UK or even Europe. But my life is taking me to Ireland. I am working on understanding work visas and securing a job before i can carry on further. I will be taking my wife and two young daughters with me. We are selling all that we have here and have saved up so that we would never become stranded if issues arise.

I have come to you guys to ask a few questions:

1. My tools have been my life, what puts food on the table, what of my tools will I be able to use there? obviously ill not need my fractional based set but move to metric. Will my Makita cordless tools be worth bringing? what about hand tools? Are there tools you guys consider to be specific to your local area?

2. I think of differences in knowledge being voltages used, and frequency. From what i know electrical codes seem similar but what are some major differences? Or even the things that make your area special? What are some resources I can turn to learn from, books videos etc?

3. What knowledge can you impart to me so that i may do all i can to well in your world, and contribute to the trade.

4. What is something you would say to me be it advice or hints without holding back. Be it honest both good and bad.

Thank you in advance for all the comments you have.

rain coat, rain hat, rain boots will be needed.

Makita cordless will be ok but you will need to get a charger for 230V.

Im sure most hand tools will come in usefull.

Leaving California to work in Ireland you might need a big box of tissues for crying into.

Are you moving to the north or south of Ireland?

If it is the north then electrical installation work is in compliance with BS7671:2008 (2015).

If it is the south then it is in compliance with ET101:2008 incorporating Amendment 2 (2016).

There are significant differences between the standards, and there is also a mandatory regulatory system in place in the south.
