Thanks very much for all of the responses. We really don't know what the problem is although Special Location's post gives us plenty to think about. The electrician and the plumber are (allegedly) coming up together on Monday to sort it. Today, the plumber arrived and ascertained that there is power in the timer box; the cable leading to to immersion heater switch; and then in the cable up to the thermostat. But, when we press the "boost" button the light goes on but nothing happens - no water heats up. Last night about 3am the Off Peak light was on at the timer box, but there was no action in the immersion heater because when we got up this morning the water was stone cold. So the power is at the timer box and all the way up to the thermostat. Surely it must be a thermostat problem? But this is the third one in as many days that now doesn't work. Yours, perplexed and stressed!!!
