Hi everyone,

I have just found this great forum and I look forward to contributing in the future. My background is I am RAF ground electrician of 24 years and have worked on a variety of electrical systems mainly in the ground support equipment field (generators, hydraulic rigs etc) but I have experience in setting up temporary electrical installations on varying scales from a simple tented structure to runway and airfield lighting. I hope I can expand my knowledge by chatting with you all and hopefully pass on some of my own.

Bye for now.

Hello Michael,

Welcome to the forum.

It's good to have you on-board. :)

Welcome to the forum mate. Got a question which came up recently on here. How do you deal with volt drop for airport runway lighting ? :)

Hi Matt, what we used to use for our temporary runway lighting is an ADB Constant Current Regulator, type TCC 1200, typically 4kw and 7.5 kw. As the load increased the CCR matched this by increasing the voltage, typically up to 5kV. The output current is controlled by a series of TRIACS and max current was in the region of 6.6A. The length of runway was anywhere between 1kM and 4kM. For runway edge lamps, we used an ADB 45W lamp spaced at 90 meters appropriate for military standards. We started to employ a interleaved system to allow for CCR failure but installing that was more labour intensive. Hope this helps, let me know.
