This is a nice fusebox,

would like to swap it for a brand new one if they will let me.

Customer wanted me to have a look to see about replacement, they blew the fuses twice when removing a wall light and a cooker without safely isolating the circuits.

You think thats bad looked at a similar one at the weekend but this was wood and had a lot of rubber cables in it 1950's vintage . Now I looked at it a few years back when they moved in gave them a quote they did nothing then and probably still won't but some people won't have the necessary work done.

Yes I am sure there are much worse ones in existence, just thought i would try and put a photo on forum as never done this before.

Also the 4th fuse holder from the left is cracked with exposed live parts, the cover is also broke and wont stay shut and some of the cpc's are twisted around the mounting screws that holds the fusebox to the wall.

I have an estate which still has a lot of the mem metal fuse boxes they were used a lot in the 60's and on another estate they have the upright mem type with four fuses in a lot are being changed over time but some people stay with them.

Batty, Lord Buckinghamshire has his own estate, oh bravo sir, I thought you were just a humble electrician, how wrong of me to assume. ROTFWL

No seriously though, its amazing that people just never want to update there most critical parts of the house until of coursebad day explode comes along!

I am not going to change them they are only peasants.

If you suggested a replacement CU as you are thinking about improved protection to the house owner, then some would want to take your advice and then you have the customer where money is tight but then there is the customer who thinks you're trying it on. The skill is convincing the ones sitting on the fence about the risk's involved with having a dated installation. There is more appliances in the home these days, more electrical items used outside so the need for better protection is important. But you can only advise and the rest is up to the house owner. I have no interest in taking people for a ride. I'm sure all the rest on this forum feel the same way..

:good night:

No, he`s serious.

The fuse carriers were fitted with an asbestos matting, (looked a little like cotton wool), which absorbed the molten fuse wire in an overcurrent event.

If you pull a fuse carrier, and see either white material behind the fuse wire in the carrier, or in the fuseholder, be very, VERY careful

KME

They do? Or is that a joke gone right over my head (as usual :innocent )
its everywhere.

if the flashpad is white cloth like material, its most likely asbestos. and iirc, its about 80% pure asbestos

the board in the OP has 2 types of fuse holder. 3036 & 1361. the 3036 has asbestos pads. also, even though there is a fuse holder on the side of the unit doesnt mean its not the 3036 type
