Im pretrtyt sure all dwellings must have smoke detectors,

not something I could quote from building regs, but I wouldnt even contemplate NOT fitting them(inc heat in kitchen),

takes a lot of cig smoke to set them off. IMO

As far as I know its a Building Reg . Also recommended for major refurbs & rewires.

Why would one not fit them ?

We price for them in every rewire quote, one job ,the customer didn't want them , we said you are paying for them , but no ,don't want them . We had actually wired them so just didn't fit them . No pleasing some folk.

Been reading up on this for my similar thread.

It is a Building Reg, page 119 of Sparks guide to the building regs.

Approved Doc B

"Requirement:

Means of Warning and Escape

B!. The building shall be designed and constructed so that there are appropriate provisions for the early warning of fire, and appropriate means of escape in case of fire from the building to a place of safety outside the building... etc

Limits on application:

Requirement B1 does not apply to any prison provided under section 33 of the Prisons Act 1952 (power to provide prisons)."

So unless your building a single floor prison it needs some sort of smoke alarm.

One per floor within 3m of all bedroom doors and 7m of all other doors.

Thanks for the help also say's Basic requirement ( in a standard house single or multi storey with no storey exceeding 200m2 floor area) interlinked smoke alarms are to be installed.

Shows you that even building control know, not been put on the drawing and passed, client told not required.

I will challenge them on it see how we go and if they decline I'll show them the onsite guide.

Mike.
