An old crabtree board with crabtree 3871 brown breakers can a modern crabtree rcbo fit in this or is it a case of fuseboard change?

I guess you mean a C50 type board?

If so then no the only thing that will fit is a C50 type unit & IIRC there were never RCBO's for that design board.

You may want to consider an alternative, not absolutely necessary to change the board, there are other options.

Dont know if c50 breakers it has brown breakers with the line rail or busbar going into the top of the breaker as you look at it i thought id have to change the board!

If they are about 1 1/2 times the width of a modern MCB then it's more than likely going to be a C50,,,, in which case the cheapest option for a single circuit alteration has to be installing an external RCD after the circuits MCB

Just done it this way for a stupid Square D (QOE) board today for 2 circuits (limited space)

The tester has put down code 2 no rcd protection on circuits if you ask me its backwards way of doing it this should have been done before testing all the results are there but nowt has been done about it now basically all the boards on the estate needs changing!

Not necessarily. C50 Crabtree boards were mainly fitted to commercial, industrial, institutions etc and not domestic. I have only ever seen C50 domestic boards on huge huge houses. If not domestic then the installations should be under the control of a compedant person and rcd may not be necessary ( although its good to have them)

i think i have seen a C50 RCBO, they take up two ways in the board ( i say think,as it was a long time ago)
No, but  they are larger than a standard  60898.

EDIT, sorry you are correct, i misread the RCBO

I have taken a couple of C50 boards out on domestic but I imagine they may have been fitted by a commercial sparks on the side both were single phase.

Thats ok i do that all the time

i think you will find that all old Crabtree C50s are BS3871,and not BS60898

The C50. Rccb's do indeed take up two ways on the board, had to extend a socket circuit at a school today and the board was choc full of 30mA rccb's.......bs4293 stamped on the side of them.

M107,

They should also have 3871 stamped on them also, as 4293 only covers the residual current side, the overcurrent side is covered by 3871 & that std requires that the number is marked on the device also.

According an old Crabtree catalogue I have if they are the RCBO then they are made to both standards, but there was an RCD version also, which was just to 4293, i.e. no overcurrent section.
