Hi guys,

I am looking to start going down the self employed road, and I just wanted to draw on the wealth of experience on here!

Used to do test and inspection in a factory/offices where I used to work, and used the old school fluke meters (which I liked). Now I am looking to go it alone and just wondered the best testers (multi function and single ones) that you guys have used. Will be doing domestic, agricultural and industrial.

Had a look at the megger mutli function testers, and they look good, just wandering if worth the money, and issues with them, etc.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers guys

And it starts all over again, :slap

A lot of it is down to personal preference,

Be sure and get one that will do Ra testing if you will be doing agricultural, or any TT,

not all meters have this test available.

Metrel seem to have some decent meters with that ability at sensible money.

Megger definitely megger!!! No, just winding Steps up!!!!! It makes no difference really.. Just get one that does Ra as Steps has advised you and after that it is just down to personal preference. Does not matter how "good" the meter is, you will only be happy with it and get good use from it if you feel comfortable and "at home" using it, so have a look at a few, and just get what seems the most suited to you.....

Personally, i like Megger stuff but that is just me, I also have a Fluke Phase rotation meter, and i love that too... just whatever feel right to you....

john..

 Steps - no Fluke/Merger wars??? ;)

As Steps said,,, there are many on the market and it ends up as personal preference and how far your budget will stretch,,, just make sure that you get the functions that you need.. IMHO Bluetooth is just a gadget that you won't use after a while and many people think that the bundled certification software isn't up to much

Get in touch with Megger Mark,,, I'm sure that he can do you a good deal on whatever your choice ends up being

Cheers for all the feed back already guys.

I know there brand wars between people, but as you guys have said there are so many on the market and I have been out of the loop for a while! felt a bit overwhelmed with all the choice!!!

Will definitely give megger mark a shout, cheers for the heads up.

I saw the Bluetooth enable one and thought it was a bit of a gimmick, was but put off by that.

Is there any point in making a "what tester should I buy thread??"

I use a fluke 1653b (older one) and Its the mutts nuts :D

Get something you feel comfortable with and like you say try avoid gimmicks the 1653 I bought came with an IR (infrared) port.... never used it.....

+1 to MM

I use megger MFT1730 and i love it.

+10 000 000 for megger mark and the ISS crew who have given me amazing service and best prices on everything i have bought from them.

I agree about the bluetooth and bundled software been a load of poop. I got the megger on site software package and its rubbish. I prefer to scribble it on a paper form and then type it up on easycert when i get back to base.
