Hi All,

I've just installed an Elro 120 watt Halogen outdoor security light with PIR for a mate and it stays on constantly, even when i adjust the timer and daylight settings underneath the PIR sensor. I spurred off a bedroom socket and mounted a 5A FCU. Can anybody offer any help as to why its permenantly on. The terminations in the sensor light are a straight L, N and Earth.

try turning the power off for about a minute and then back on again,

turn the time setting to minimum, lux level to maximum, and sensitivity to minimum, before you do this.

this will (hopefully) exclude the possibility of the over-ride function and hopefully the calibration setting being wrong.

I've already tried that twice. I've even took one back to the wholesalers and replaced it with another, thinking it was a faulty light.

I've put quite a few security lights up and never had this problem. Its normally straight forward, L-L, N-N and E-E.

well, you have a problem now,

so, you either need to be certain your cabling is correct, or the light is faulty,

you have already said its not a faulty fitting as you have changed it,(testing it first would have been a better idea), so that only leaves one answer left.

Had the same problem with a similar light a few weeks ago. Finally worked out that when the light was first turned on it had to be left for up to 5 mins without being disturbed. ie, don't set the PIR off. It did say this in the instruction leaflet on the one I had (only read it after I had put replaced the first unit). Dunno if that helps at all!

but he has already said he has let it self calibrate at least twice.

Has he?

He probably thought he did, but sometimes we all get a little impatient. I know I have, and even replaced them thinking they were faulty.

I would go with dodgy fitting, but could be wired wrong. Did you test the curcuit you spurred from, and just a side note I always fit 3 amp fuse not 5

perhaps,?!

that is why I said turn the time down,

I did some last year on max time setting that took almost 45mins to calibrate!

Yep. Just saying that the one I had a problem with stayed on permanently if the sensor detected movement whilst it was self-calibrating.

Danijah , picking up on what Stepps says , sometimes there is a loop terminal that should have nothing connected to it , you may have put your feed in that.

Or the assembly wiring is wrong , with a direct feed to the lamp from your L terminal .

Ha ! Just had that with a PIR Half Lantern customer got from Argos . On all the time , bright sunlight . Told her to switch it on again when dark and presume its working , no callback.
