Yesterday I fitted an outside light for a customer and also a friend. The fitting itself was chosen by the customer from a famous diy outlet beginning with B and ending in Q. It is a type that goes dim in standby mode and goes to full brightness when it detects movement. It has three little red adjustment screws under the ' eyelid ' of the sensor. The instructions state that when adjustment is made you turn one screw fully anti clockwise and the other one fully clockwise and from here you can gradually adjust the sensor so the light will come on at dusk when you want it to. When I was turning the screws they kept turning, I would have thought that they would come to a stop but light was working and customer said see how we go with it. I spoke to the customer this morning and he said that when he got home late last night the light was coming on and off all the time. I suspect a faulty unit. He will change it today for me to fit tomorrow when I'm over that way..Anyone else had experiences with these type of lights..

Not exactly that type but from the same place. I now have pir floods and 1 pir lantern in my garage from them all carp! Only used them cos w'saler didnt have white. Never again from there cost me a fortune. Receipt in storage with last years accounts! Reckon they lasted 9 months but with loads of problems had to swap free of charge!

I have one very similar on my own house but that's been there for over 5 yrs now so I've been lucky with it and It still has the original lamp!!. So I suppose the detector is shot as there must be some electronics in there to make the lamp go dim like it should do in standby mode. The lamp is a ES 60w GLS.The unit is switched by a DP switch as the loop is in the back box and everything is terminated correctly..

I hate PIR floods with a vengance, the wholesalers save up all the faulty ones and sell them to me , lost count of the number I've had to swop for nothing. On the usual

i have used a couple of them, they seem to work really well, and if they do break, just twist the top and replace... it takes seconds...

Had three B&Q specials over about 18 months. Cheap and chatty. I am thoroughly ****ed off with changing the security light on my shed. Must have got through 2 SF ones. Went into the local CEF as we have an account and the few they had for sale were no better quality.

When this one goes I'm gonna have to have a radical rethink.

They do have a setting that allows a low level light that gets brighter when the PIR is triggered. You can turn this off using one of the three dials.

I fitted one of these last week (purchased by customer from B&Q), the red adjustment dials should come to a stop and not keep on turning. TBH I did have problems setting it up as the blooming thing would not turn off on the dimmed setting until I shined my torch on the sensor.

The customer (elderly lady) didnt realise it was a dimmed/ pir light, she thought it just came on when somebody walked ino the detection area, she has also lost the receipt.

She is now going to turn it off during daytime and only put it on when she is off out in the evening so she can get to her front door easily, otherwise I have said I will fit her a standard PIR light if she wants me to.

You can set it so it is not dimmed and only triggered when the PIR detect movement. It's an option.

I think the light I fitted yesterday has a mind of its own??. Still going back tomorrow and I'm tempted not to touch the little red screws this time.. :Blushing

Those little red screws behind the eyelid should come to a stop though shouldn't they? The customer was following the instructions that I'd left for him and he completely unscrewed the damned screw. Will try a replacement tomorrow and see how we go.. :pray

It's probably poor quality electronics inside the fitting controlling the lamp to come on. I didn't realise that a few members have had the same problems.. ; \

Fitted exchange light fitting today so fingers crossed this one will be ok.. By mutual agreement with the customer, have decided to leave the red adjusting screws well alone for now to see how the factory setting behaves.. :D

Would appreciate that , Matty.
I managed to take some pictures of the outside of the box (attached) it is actually made in England but the parts must have been made in Germany as it had German words stamped into the metal on the light.

I have tried the dial setting fully each way and the lamp always remains lit on dimmed.

so glad this was only a local job and not too far away,...otherwise it might have been thrown through the blxxdy retailers window!!! X(

Did you read the instructions? I think it was the right hand side dial all the way in one direction or the other. May be wrong.
