Evening,

My cousin has just bought a house and every time she turns on the oven (separate oven and hob) the RCD trips.

So yes, likely a faulty oven but, is there any way to find the problem with the oven. I've never trouble shot appliances before, so fancy a look. What would I test, what test and what should I expect?

I was thinking combined L+N to E IR test, I've heard elements can fail, this one does heat up, how would i test an element?

(Oven starts to warm up then trips, once warm trips pretty much instantly)

Oven is a Candy mod FL102 x UK 33700063 0335 1048 2300W.

And... is there any point/are there serviceable parts?

Thanks, have a good Easter guys.

element would be my very first guess,

IR/continuity test the element cold, then do it again hot/warm and note the change, bet it will be big,

thats where my money is,

may well be a fairly cheap repair.

as above, open up the back and take a look mate, you should spot the element terminals from the back. I bought one the other day for 26quid, don't do appliances but this was for a friend.

Thank you for the swift replies :)

Will have a look early next week and get back to you.

They've just bought a 3 story 6 bed house and already planning to rip kitchen out, new Gym, Home office new lights power etc.

May turn out to be my entry point to part p scam as getting kept on at work looking shaky after apprenticeship is complete. They are happy to notify LABC and have accessors in from scheme.... hmm which one though.

Thanks again, off to pick up my drunken wife. Have a good long weekend.

quick tip mate, get your IR tester on the plug top, and start unplugging the connectors on various items in the oven, as soon as your tester clears theres the item at fault.

she's a bit of a lightweight,

a cheap date we used to call them,

not even half 10 and shes rollin'

:D

And you can often remove the element from within the oven housing without removing the oven from the carcass
always a bonus when that happens

little tip: keep some spare croc clips to grab the wires when you remove element, otherwise they will vanish into the back, never to be seen again until you remove the whole thing along with the 50+ screws that hold the back cover in place

Thanks for the suggestions. Elements screwed in from the back so had to pull it out anyway, hey ho.

L+N to E gave 0.03Mohms

Disconnected top element and got 5.87Mohms

Disconnected bottom element also >20Mohms

Tested top "outside" element to earth in situ 1.56Mohms

Tested top "inside" element to earth in situ 0.02Mohms

Tested bottom element to earth in situ (warm) 0.01Mohms.

Disconnected top element and switched on, bottom warmed up and tripped after a longer period than normal.

Disconneected both element and switched on no tripping.

Put it all back together and a quick check on interwebnetty for prices, 75 top and 25 for bottom. looks like they'll opt for a new oven.

Thanks for the help folks.
