I have just given a placement for a second year student.

I can not afford to employ any one at this time but I was willing to give a person a second chance rather than standing on street corners and abusing passer bys.

To be honest in this climate it is very hard for anyone to take on a liability, which to be honest all apprentices and un- trained are.

The Health and safety issues that go alongside employment are so far out of this world, that when I lit my home coal fire in 1967, I would have seen my parents executed for negligent abandonment of parential care.

Regardless of the fact that when a 6 year old can safely light a fire, boil a kettle on a chimney hook, wake the family to a warm home and still be a child and enjoy life.

Health and safety, the claim culture have all contributed to the demise of the apprentice situation, and the inability of employment.

If you really want a profession go into politics, no qualifications required and, you get to keep all your pay.

The government have ruined the country with employees rights and other crap. I employed a lad for a while he needed work experience to finish his training. I took him on as I had a big job coming up. We agreed when he would start then he said by the way I am going on holiday for two weeks straight away. This was ok but it meant half the big job I did myself any way. The other thing he had not told me he was a diabetic. Now I have not got a problem with this as I am diabetic myself. I did not know he was diabetic until the first time he had a hypo. Know what if he had had one on a scaffold and had fallen off. Would that be my fault or his own for not telling me about his medical condition.

Batty - he has a duty to inform his employer of any medical conditions that could affect his fitness to work, and you are not legally allowed to discriminate against him based on it! If he'd said nothing I think you'd be ok.

i got 2 interviews, and i said yes to the first one. I worked with that bloke for about 2 years and now i am on my own... and havent looked back since!

persistence is really the only way ! just try not to get down by no one getting back to you or saying no all the time, ... good luck!

(1) Put your details on here.

(2) Put your details in local wholesalers trade counters.

(3) Become a polititian , the expenses are really good.

(4) I see yam in Doodley , theres a couple of Doodlyuns on here I think.

I think at the moment everyone is very cautious about hiring, even when busy we are holding back and trying to stack up work for the guys we already employ. Don't give up I am sure a break will come your way eventually. Some of our best guys came through as trainees, try your college they often have connections.

Things will get better, but for any business owner large or small things are tough at the moment, I know I have aquired a lot more grey hair this year !

One thing I have learned over the past year is just how fragile our trade can be.

I rode out the setbacks we had in the early 90's that was a bad time for construction, my main jobs at that time was for new builds, that soon turned sour.

Then along came part p in 2005, that saw an amazing increase in overnight electricians.

I wished I would have waited instead of going through all that torture at aged 16.

Thats just me being cynical.

All I know is that I recieve about 5 calls a day from very good sparks who have been made redundant, and I feel that their knowledge and skills are now wasted and lost in the turmoil caused by this and previous governments in allowing fat cats to get fatter.

Cheers mate,

I am ideally looking for either new install or domestic but to be far any experience is better than none.
