hi, went to a house to today to look at the installation as it was noted on the morgage inspection that the electrics need to be looked at an electrician.

needs new board, no earth at lights, garage sockets wired off house lights, no bonding etc... but the supply puzzeled me a little can you identify it for me please - ie why two supplies, ive not seen this before but sure some one on here has and will probably say its common.

thanks in advance

wayne

The supply in the picture is a TNS, with loop.

This means that the supply cable enters this property, is then split inside the dno;s housing so that two houses share the same feed from the main supply.

You will come accross this type of supply very often.

One of the main safety problems you will face is when removing/upgrading any earthing, the house you are working in can be controlled by you being onsite, but next doors property may be left without any earthing whilst you carry on your works.

So be carefull.

In my area the DNO will change the cut out free of charge, they may do the same for you in your area.

It appears to be a TNS supply but the two cables is interesting, is it a house or flats? I'm wondering if it's looped to another property or the occasional old practice of a second phase for off-peak.

I've seen cut-out enclosures like this before, with BS3036 main fuses, in one case with a fused neutral also (overlooked when the supply authority upgraded the rest of the street), it might be worth contacting the supply company.

in agreement,

looks like a 1 in 1 out set up,

supply carried on to the next property.

also, watch those fuse carriers,

probably asbestos in them thar things, ]:)

thanks for the advice guys makes sence tns split to two house, just ive never seen it (i aint been in the game that long so sure it will pop up again).

too brian - its the end house of a terraced row.

i will contact DNO tomorrow, would you suggest getting dno to upgrade the earth from sheath to metso that i dont need to disconect it so earth to next door wont be affected by me (covering me B.side)

cheers wayne

They should do a cutout change, as Steptoe says and others there is a possibility that the nuetral is also fused, but not always.

The earthing clamps fitted are not "NOT"( just to embelish )what any dno would fit.

This stripping of the cable down to the lead outer is normally done by electricians who are too Idle to call the local DNO to do any work.

It is also a very dangerous practice, given the age of the cable.

951 clamps on lead is a very bad idea, because it can crush the cable, and worst case is it goes bang

but even if it was the correct clamps fitted, you should NOT be touching them anyway - your only concern is the MET to the RHS of the cutout

DNO will replace that FOC, got a little bit of leaking pitch to by looks of it, even a small ammount like that id have that as an emergency call and replace within 4 hours. will require isolation on the service cable for that to.

and while i would not ever recomend clamps on PILC did you know on all underground joints the earth is maintained threw with a jubilie clip and copper mesh, (in central networks area anyway) this is used on all cables upto 66KV !

For gods sake don't try and remove them earth clamps by wedgeing a screwdriver behind them and levering off!

I learnt that one about 10 years ago!

Very bit BANG FLASH as screwdriver goes through lead sheath straight to Live!

Clean pants and an emergency call to DNO!

On a completely different and more trivial note, the on/off tag on the main switch of that MEM CU caught my eye. I've seen hundreds of that style MEM unit, which seem to have been a very popular choice during the appropriate era around this area, but I don't recall ever seeing one where the "Off" designation is written vertically as in this case.

Indeed it is a TNS Looped (into next door - mine is).

I requested a higher fuse, took about 3 weeks?, DNO came, but had to change the whole cut out as it was an old one.

:D

thats sorted then, ill be putting our upgrade order in on monday then to a free 3 phase upgrade :^O
Good luck with that.

Guess Admin was lucky the DNO's cable was of high enough capacity to support the bigger cutout fuse but I guess some will not be and would need a big trench in the front garden.

Try telling them you are having electric boilers and underfloor heating.
