Just had a call to a job. 3 gang switch in kitchen. One switching the outside light, working fine, one switching the kitchen centre light, working fine, the third switching the cabinet lights, not working. Lady says they've stopped working since hubby put a new centre light up, 3 spot GU10's, you know the sort.

Check bulbs, ok

Check feed to switch, nowt!

Open up centre light fitting to find permanent lives looped in connector block, neutrals in another, and two switch wires in another? All in old colours. Now sticking out of the ceiling not connected to anything is 1.5 T&E in new colours.

Me thinks this is where the problem lies, but alas there are no new colours in the switch, save for the out going flex to the SELV cabinet lights.

Checked the cable at the light fitting and thank god it's dead! but a mystery.

Any thoughts?

Told them I would return in daylight so I can have the power off and run some continuity tests to try and fathom out where it all goes.

Oh and did I mention the earths were not connected in the new metal light fitting headbang

Part P could have ended this sort of nonsense... but of course like all poor legislation, it has failed.

Joe Public looks at you as if you have 2 heads when you mention Part P.

What about electricians who keep saying they are Part P qualified when it is a BUILDING REGULATION and not a Qualification.

Hehe yeah true... there was enough publicity about it at the time though.

People usually just ignore rules that are of little interest or inconvenient to them I reckon.
