My boy, 13 wants a portable media player BUT not I stress a phone as such. Something that'll fit in his pocket. A bit more than an MP3 player, something that will play videos without hassle. BEFORE you say it, anything Apple is a NON-STARTER so no iPod etc. Anyway, the Samsung:

I was thinking of the "Samsung Galaxy S Wifi 5.0". Only downer is it has Android 2 point something but for all that seems quite decent. Any other suggestions? The Archos 43 was one I was looking at along with the "from Hong Kong" jobbies made by "Icoo".

Kicking myself as HMV WERE doing the Samsungs for £50 a couple of moths ago!

jaysus Onoff

you 'could' buy a 2nd hand decent 'droid phone for half that price,

I have an x10i running 2.something and it works spot on, in fact my mate actually bought a year and a half old one a couple of weeks back for £80.

try looking at the Elonex Touchscreen HD Media Player, not bad little items and not such a bad price either!

For better or worse I ended up getting a phone in the end. Went for an HTC Desire C at phones4u . Price wise it was either this or the Galaxy Ace. But I figured this has Android ICS 4.0 whereas the Samsung only has 2.3. (Though rumour has it they might offer a legit OS update early 2013). Figured he'll have more choice of apps with ICS than 2.3. The processor half worries me as it's only 600MHz whereas the Samsung is 800MHz. Been advised to install the Opera browser, as it's fast it will apparently help with the "slow" processor.

Time will tell!

Get him a phone and dont put a sim card in.
This one is Pay As You Go, had to buy a £10 top up to get the phone cheap. The SIM is on T-Mobile (it was cheapest) though the phone is unlocked. It was £79.95 + the £10. He already has an old PAYG and doesn't use that particularly as a phone or anything else. He doesn't even use Facebook etc so I'm not overly worried about massive phone use. The thing is just really for MP3's, videos with the added phone bit if he's late or we'll be late getting him from the bus. No doubt when the hormones kick in he'll be pestering for top ups so he can phone some girl but at the mo he's happiest in front of a pc playing games and Skypeing with his mates. Saying that we get virtually no service on any network where we live it's that bad, maybe 1 bar upstairs if you're really lucky! Even terrestrial TV reception is bad. I've ended up with a giant Band A aerial 30m up the garden on a huge pole - as I refused to "get a dish". Of course the other thing about being in a valley is that when it snows it fills up!

I actually had a play with the HTC last night (I don't have a smart phone myself) and managed to get on this interweb thingy via our home router. Was quite pleased I got that far, even managed to watch something on YouTube!

I'm tempted when I've got some spare cash by one of these iPhone look a likes with Android on:

Seems you can JAVA based iPhone look a likes ones for like £50/60 - don't know if they can be "re-flashed"?
