Hello to all,

Can you advise me on the following.

I need to supply power to a shed which is only 10 feet from my property.

The shed will house a tumble dryer & a light.

The CU is at the other end of the house and not easily accessible.

Can i tap into a double switch socket directly across from the shed inside the house using an RCD spur.

The socket is on the first floor and therefore an overhead to shed option would be preferred.

I assume i need a CU in the shed.

Also which type of cable is needed ie SWA, Earthing etc

I have added some pics as suggested also the socket I suggested spurring from is on the ring.

This post has no link to an other postings.

Any and all replies appreciated.

One option.

Change the mcb at the consumer unit for an RCBO, put a fused spur next to the socket upstairs, swa from the fused spur to shed. In shed put in the socket for the tumble dryer & spur off to a fused spur for the light.

All I would add, is that was written in 2005, i.e 16th edition was in force, so it only mentions RCD protection for the socket in the outbuilding.

Now under 17th you pretty much need RCD protection for everything.

So if you are going to supply the outbuilding from an existing ring final that does not have RCD protection, do it cia an RCD FCU.

 
No need for a CU in shed, do as the others have said and fit RCD spur in house, feed  shed with a SWA with a double socket and a spur for the light. Put a 3A fuse in that spur.

More important (for me only) never seen a meter like in your pics. Whats the keypad for  (payment ?), whats the meter & any chance of a close up piccy ?

 
The meter with the keypad looks like an 'energy dispenser' as it's known around here. You buy prepaid electricity from a shop and punch in the number when you arrive home. The meter then credits you with the appropriate number of units.

Somewhere rattling around the bowels of the forum it has been linked on quite  few threads.

Just because the socket is upstairs doesn't mean you have to go overhead...

cables down the outside wall is just as visible as an overhead cable...

I personally would avoid overhead if possible!

 
Not saying don't do overhead...   it was just the logic of the OP's satement..

and pointing out that where the supplying is coming from may or may not have any relevance on the best way to get to the shed..

Some domestic sheds aren't the strongest of structures and if easy ground level routes are available with minimal cost difference

My be just a good going down and around?

Few more meters of cable down a wall -vs- Overhead wires & fixings.

Time & materials may not be a fat lot of difference?

Without seeing the actual layout hard to say which way is the best, neatest, most cost effective...

2.5mm cable should be fine. We could debate for years what type of cable to use.........

13A 30mA RCD spur will do just fine. Make sure you get a deep enough box as they have a lot of internals to squeeze in.

I would likely go overhead too.
