prepayment meter eating credit

Just moved into a house where there is prepayment meters. Never used them before. Gas is on em cred but not using any at the mo. Elec was showing zero so pressed and got £5 em credit. Put £15 on the key and inserted it and the £15 flashed up for a second then disappeared. now showing £1.85 like it was before... where has it gone? can previous owner have had a debt on it?

previous debt can be collected by the meter. you need to contact energy supplier and get it change to your details so you are not paying someone else's debt. or get it changed for a normal meter

that will give you an idea if there was a debt being paid via the meter

If you used the former tenant’s card you pick up any standing charges due. Get your own card to wipe the slate.

Don't get your own card, get a normal meter on a standard tariff. Ring up whoever the supplier is ASAP and book in to get rid before you end up spending all your money on it. I moved into a house with one and it cost a fortune in the time it took them to come out and change it. I was hardly even in the place and never used any electric when I was. Keep receipts and record what you use so you can claim back the difference.

& don't let them put in a smart meter, because they aren't too clever and you may end up with brain cancer.

have my own british gas account, debts wiped and now in credit.

New tarrif organised with a different supplier which according to MSE will save me £455 pa with credit meters

NO way am I having a smart meter

The cheapest I could find when I switched was IRESA

11.135p per unit, 20.65p per day standing charge, tariff fixed for 12 months, no exit fee.

It took 3 months to switch because they stopcocked it up and got my MPAN number wrong to start with. I have since read a LOT of bad things about their customer support so beware if you try them.

Prior to that, before we moved in and it was just a building site with almost zero usage, we were with ebico on a no standing charge tariff but a much higher unit price. That worked well for a very low usage but was no good when we started using a normal amount.
