Hi,

Just been round customers house and she wants a price for changing 2 light fittings from pendants to fancy big metal fittings. (1st floor bedrooms)

The ceiling is artexed and the loft above is boarded so I dont know whether the pendants have been wired next to a joist. So i cant tell whether the new fittings can be fixed to the joist.

What do you guys do in this situation. Also would you check Earth continuity at quotation stage?

Cheers

Also this doesnt need to be rcd protected if im just changing like for like. Even though im changing from pendants to metal fittings. Ie, from class 2 pendants not requiring an Earth to metal fittings which do require an Earth. Long day head hurting stupid question sorry

have a poke around above the pendant with a wire while you are still there to get a idea of what you are up against on the day will only take a minute to have a poke around.

I would check for earths at this stage just by looking in the pendant.

I use various plasterboard screw in fixings that seem to work well if you can't get a fixing into a joist.

Some frown on them though, as there's some ruling that a light fitting should be able to support 5Kg or something like that.

However, if it's not a pendant fitting, so unlikely to ever to have to support anything other than it's own weight, then I don't see a problem. I just put several fixings to support it as best I can.

Sf have got fixings called snap toggles, they are fantastic. Though the fancy lights I have fitted have had just one center hook that the light hooks on to. I also have some 1mm handy to tie on to the hook an temp supend the light whilst connecting

  1. Drop pendant, use a long bit & drill up through loft boarding to give a location & look to see if boarding is nailed to joist. Giving indication you have a joist to fix light to.
  2. Drop pendant, use a long bit & drill up through loft boarding to give a location & cut boarding to insert noggin for fitting to be fixed to (fein tool .....oh yes).
  3. Use plasterboard toggle bolts to fix fitting to ceiling (would be my option).
