Hi

Bit of a strange one, but we had some problems with the mains power to the house going off a few times one day recently and since then the chandelier light we have in our bedroom will not go to full brightness using the dimmer switch.

The light I a 6 bulb chandelier and the dimmer switch was a remote (touch sensor or controlled by a programmable button on any remote control), bought from B&Q.

Since the power-cuts the light will not go to full brightness, leaving the room too dark. All the bulbs are OK (have tried replacing, but no difference).

The lights dim all the way down and then as they go back up, they don't get to full brightness before they start to dim again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Steve

Dimmers had it

check connections on dimmer first.

to confirm this replace with standard switch ,,, if the lamps come to correct brightness then bobs your uncle

First guess faulty dimmer switch...?

What sort of lamps are in the fitting

230v, 12v, Halogen, LED, standard GLS candle lamps other...

Have you had any lamps blow recently?

Some cheapo halogen lamps can often damage the circuitry in a dimmer when they blow.

Try turning the power off at the consumer unit, wait a few minutes, then turn on.

Just thinking it's a clever controller with a microcontroller in it, that''s got confused by a brown out.  Think of it as rebooting a computer that has crashed.

Probably won't fix it, but it costs nothing to try.

The bulbs are just standard candle bulbs 40w each.

None have gone for a while, but I did replace the full set as a couple had gone over time and we couldn't find the exact same bulbs again. They worked fine until the power problems.

ProDave - not sure what you mean by turn off at consumer unit?

Go to your consumer unit, find the circuit breakers labelled "lights", there will usually be 2 of them. Turn them off. Wait a minute or so and turn them back on again,.

Are you sure you put the right bulbs in?  60W and it might overload the dimmer, or you might have put 25W in which would be dim even on full.  Perhaps you didn't notice this immediately and the power cut has nothing to do with it?

Ah OK, I know what you mean. We have 3 separate circuit breakers for the lights, but I'm fairly sure I've had that circuit off since the problem started. Worth trying it again though.

Yes they are the right bulbs and they were fine before the power cuts. There are 6 x 40w, so it should be pretty bright - certainly brighter than it is.
