Hi all. Today I installed a proteus double stacked consumer unit. After installing and before testing the installation I powered up, without any mcbs switched on. Within 20-30 seconds I noticed smoke coming from the first rcd. I disconnected it and left the second one in, which within the same time once I powered back up started to buzz for a couple of seconds and then started to smoke.

I checked the mains polarity. which was correct

Could they be a faulty batch or another problem?

Many thanks Oakley

Well....

for smoke to be coming out, current must be flowing...

for current to be flowing... Something must be on... or some electricity must be flowing down a path it is not intended to flow down..

You don't actually say what rating the RCD's are..

(not the 30ma trip rating)....

the MAX load rating??

I assume 63A or 80A...????

You haven't got a 25A / 30ma RCD have you...

e.g. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CPR25.htmlhttp://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/CPR25.html

and running more than 25A through it?

TBH..

you really should be just discussing this with your supplier...

It's their problem to supply you with proper kit

Unless to DID connect it up wrong first!

you should have sealed all the gaps with silicone to stop the smoke escaping!!!

Did you push the TEST button on the RCD?

Was it a pre wired CU?

SOME makes of double pole RCD will go up in smoke if you you have the input power on the wrong set of terminals when you press the test button. Compounded by the fact that it's not always clear which is the input, the top or the bottom.

Both rcds were pre wired 80amp rated. I've never came across this before so I am pretty confused.

I did ring proteus not long after posting on here. They think both rcds are faulty, but I'm not so sure both would be.

I put my test lamps on the main switch in front of the rcds between live and earth and the first rcd tripped, and pressed the test button on the second rcd and the first one also tripped again, so I'm pretty sure this one is faulty.

The only time I have had this was as I already said, the input was connected to the wrong side.

In the event of a trip, the release coil is energised and then the power should be cut off when it opens.

In the case of power in the wrong end, the release coil remains energised even after it's opened and is not rated for more than a few mS of operation so it burns out.

Even if this is not power in the wrong end, it still sounds like the same type of fault. the release coil is energising but for whatever reason (faulty mechanism?) the contacts don't open and the release coil burns out.

Ive just priced an SBS Dave board for a client, who knows and realises all the dangers,

he wants to know how much cheaper for a normal board,

Ive simply emailed him back saying I no longer install consumer units that fail to meet the actual requirements of BS7671 are are in fact a half hearted attempt at a cheap alternative,

gave him the reasons why,

Im not sure why he is bothered about a couple of hundred quid when he has just purchased a 350K house tbh, but there you go.
