Air conditioning unit going in on a shop. New supply needed. To be run in NYJJ (Hi Tuff) straight to isolator. Runs through a hole in the roof and laid on cable tray. Is an RCD really necessary?!

Glad to hear it! Had another electrician who came in more expensive than me slating me, telling the customer that I should be reported to the NICEIC because he believes any new circuit, regardless of design, should have RCD protection so if I wasn't Polish I must be a cowboy  :|

Glad at least someone agrees with me!

Others may not , I'm old school and often wrong but its  fixed equipment , don't see a problem.

A lot of sparks seem to  become a bit OTT  .   A regular sparks at my wholesaler was on about an RCD for a job in a toilet  ...I asked if it was for a hand drier or oversink heater .......   thinking of an RCD spur unit .... .no its just the light  , T/E  switch & batten holder .   Why an RCD ?    Well lts all that water  is'nt it ?    :C

Then he should be reported to the NIC for not having a clue what he's talking about.

RCD may be required but from your description i doubt it is. maybe he's a 5ww who has been told all circuits in a house must be RCD'd and he thinks it applies everywhere
