a frend of mine as just phoned me and said heas just cut is exstension lead with a trimmer but rcd did not trip only fuse in lead i ask it was a 2core or 3 core lead he replyied 3 core i said t should have as you would have had am imbalence causeing rcd to trip could do wi t right in sayng this

he said cut the cable in half but like you said if line -live first no trip but i still might go to him to test the rcd jst to give me peace of mind i know he had a new cu fitted a few months ago not by me and the spark insp &tested the whole house in 3 hours

HAHA, I cut through my hedge trimmer lead last week, just as I had nearly finished the hedge as well! Cant believe I didnt spot that bloomin bright orange lead in the way lol!

However, only the circuit breaker tripped and not the RCD as its a class 2 appliance with a 2 core lead attached, so no connection to earth.

Most strimers are double insulated therefore no earth
So? You don't need a functional earth to trip the RCD. Wouldn't me much fun if you were the path to earth.......

If live - neutral cut (shorted together) this would result in overload fault therefore no earth leakage, and no tripping of the rcd.

Consider the speed of the blades though, if L and N were cut first and the fuse blew, the blades would not stop instantly and would then probably cut the earth too before they stopped moving. It would be almost impossible to prove the order the wires were cut.

Test the circuit and Rcd to prove all is ok for his peace of mind.
