Can I ask a question please. I am installing a new bigger loft hatch and there is a cable in the way, running from landing light to bedroom light. There isnt enough slack to re route around the new hatch area. Would I need to run a new cable from rose to rose or can it be added to? Also what size cable would I need. Many thanks.

It's much better to replace the length than joining it. and probably easier if access is straightforward.
It's probably wired in either 1mm or 1.5mm twin and earth. Either size is acceptable, but ideally snip a bit of one end of a core and take it with you to match size.

If access is easy then a new length of cable, on the other hand, extend using WAGO connectors and box from Screwfix or similar.

Thanks for the reply lads, would be strait forward rose to rose if there were no loft boards and a load of crap on top of them....!

If I used a splitter box would it matter if it's 1mm attached to 1.5mm twin cable or vice versa.

It might be a straight rose to rose cable, it might be going to a junction box or switch, you also might be able to fit one end of the new cable to the old bit go to the other side and pull the new bit straight in without disturbing boards or insulation, there is a lot of if and buts which you will need to suss out but usually not to difficult.
Keep asking the questions as you get more info and we will try and answer from afar.

Nope, it doesnt matter.
check the size of the MCB or fuse first
