I was amazed at the story I read on it. They showed a map with the alleged flight path of the Russian planes. They were seen on radar off the west coast of Scotland and managed to fly down the length of the country before being intercepted around Cornwall. Our two Typhoons were "scrambled" from a base on our EAST coast!

Still. what can you do with only two planes. I guess too that they had to send out for parts etc.

Meanwhile on the USS Ponce...

I want to see them try than on an Excocet coming in at wave top level  faster than they can see!

have seen Tornaodes do that a few times, so impressive, slow compared to the old Lighting thoiugh. We get  a lot of low level flight training aross Devon flying up from Cornwall, always interesting to watch.

I thought (probably wrongly) the all EE Lightnings were grounded.  Has that changed or have I just imagined that?  Thought it was something to do with even although it is quite an old plane the technology was very advanced for the time and now has reliability issues.

I dont think that I ever worked on any Lightning stuff, but I did work on bits from pretty much everything from Hunters and Buccaneers to Harriers and Tornados

None of the stuff was cutting edge,,, you have to remember that most of the kit in those aircraft was designed ages ago,,,, the Harrier bombing computer was mainly a mechanical affair with motors, synchros etc....My calculator at the time had more computing power

Tornados were designed in the 60's - I've seen some of the original hand-drawn design drawings. Most planes are basically 10years in design stage - it's a slow process.

Lightning was designed purely as a high speed interceptor aircraft, it's basically just a bloody big engine with ust enough windspan to allow take off and landing. It dates from the time we could afford single purpose aircraft, where as eevrything we have now is multi-tasking / fighter / bomber / whatever.

We have a Vulcan Bomber here at Southend Airport. A few years ago they took it for a blast down the runway.  It used to be parked up in the front lawn at 'Roller City' 30 year ago, they drove it down to the airport a good few years ago.

Last year 2 lancaster bombers and some spitfires landed at the airport and did a photo shoot with the Vulcan.

there was a fantastic documentary on BBC a couple years ago about the bombing run to Falklands. It was amazing the amount refueling they had to do to get there.

was that on the bbc?

Im surprised with how anti-British they are tbh,

but Ive watched it a couple of times now,

amazing how even when they thought they wouldnt have enough fuel to return to a 'safe' place they carried on,

was a really good bit of tv for a change.

That was what I meant in an earlier post. Only went past it once and recognised it straight away. I was told they used it to clear ice / snow from the runway in winter. Glad it's still going :)
