Scale drawing calculation

Evening all ,

Anyone please can show me how to calculate "ratio scale "

E.g.

A scale drawing of a building is drawn 500mm x 300mm . the actual size of the building is 25m x 15m . what scale is used ?

A. 1:100

B. 1:50

C. 50:1

D. 100:1

is there any simple way to remember this calculation ?

It's really easy - you just need to get them both into the same units and then divide one by the other.

So 500mm = 25m, but 100cm in a meter and 10mm in a cm so 1,000mm in a meter

So 500mm = 25,000

25000/500

Scale is B 1:50

Simples

 

[SPECIAL LOCATION]

First get them both in the same units..

e.g.

500mm x 300m = 25m x 15m.

put the 'm' into 'mm' by multiple by 1000.

so

500mm x 300mm = 25000 x 15000

divide out to see what the ratio is

25000/500 = 50

or

15000/300 = 50

so all you now need to suss out..

is it 1:50 OR 50:1 ?

the first bit of the ratio is normally your plan or map

and the second bit is the real world...

so for every 1mm on your plan it equals 50mm in the real word..

1:50!

i.e.

300mm plan = 300x50 = 15000mm = 15m!

I will just add...

if you can't remember which way round it is

e.g.

50:1

or

1:50

Just think of OS maps..

i.e.

Landranger are 1:50,000

Explorer ar 1:25,000

so its the small bit "your plan or map" size that comes first! Guinness
