can someone help me out please, I have wired up the bathroom looping lightes fro recess spots and tried to wire up the extractor fan but im having difficulty getting it to work, I took the feed from last light to a fused socket and then took load up to fan with twin earth and fan has s/l and no earth how do I wire in from this point. hope this is clear

You can run in another T & E alongside the 1st T&E and just use one Line conductor from it { you should also connect up the cpc to the cpc of the 1st T&E...terminated in a connector block inside the fan casing.

1st T & E..

--Brown ----Live

--Blue ----Neutral

--CpC ...to connector block

2nd T & E

--Brown ----S/L

--Blue--unused

--CpC..to connector block {as for 1st T & E ]

...consder installing a 3-pole isolator --in line .

a1spark, the fan is too small to get connetor block in casing and cpc?...

andyc, would I need to run this 3c/e from a junction box back to fan?

thanks for your replies

you would need it from fan to feed/light switch junction.

Brown - perm. live

black - neutral

Grey - switched live

its next to the light switch outside room it has 2 sets line in and line out terminals and e

the last light feed comes into this and I then took l and n up to fan

Wrong !

On the introduction of harmonized colours it was stated that..

Brown-- -Live

Black--- S/L [ with brown sleeving ]

Grey--- Neutral [ with blue sleeving ]

This was so as to instill in the industry the new custom of Black being used Soley as a Line conductor {think 3-phase]

Hope this advice has benn beneficial to you Andy ;)

if its 'wrong', show me a regulation.

its personal preference as to what you use as neutral. my choice is black. yours is grey. get over it.

We have had this discussion on this forum before.

We did at the time decide that users of this forum would adopt a habit of continuing with the 3 phase colour codes and would sleeve accordingly.

Therefore Black would in this case be sleeved Blue for neutral as black was the original neutral.

You do not have to follow this forums habbits but we all thought that if we did it in harmony then at least forum users will never be confused.

your the problem, stating that its 'wrong', with nothing to back up the claim. would have been different if you had said you personal preference would be to use grey, but you didnt.

Thanks for your post Green Hornet....I was not aware of previous discussions on this subject........Have read various articles expressing the colour convention I described.....Will try and search for the publishers of them and list them when I find them......it may be beneficial for other members.

Just another take on this subject....

Had a quick look at Regs Book..found this info..

Appendix 7: Table 7B.

Cable Type . Old Core Colours. New Core Colours.

3-Core & Earth Red, Yellow, Blue Brown, Black, Grey

--Using the above information and applying it to a standard 3-core fan circuit..

Old Wiring----Was always : ........... Red-Live. Yellow-S/L. Blue--Neutral

..Agreed ?....

New Wiring..

--It then logically follows..thus........ Brown-Live. Black-S/L. Grey--Neutral

..All with Brown or Blue sleeving fitted where applicable.

..The Regs dont specifically mention 3-core fan circuits but the above seems to reinforce the" Black Not a neutral convention"

...Dont want to rake up an old thread though.....just thouight i would offer this info for members benefit.

Regards..a1spark.

Edit...Sorry the relevant part of Table 7b didnt come out in the correct Form

I know Andy Earlier put me right on how to do it but ive messed up again........Must Try Harder !

Please refer to the table in the regs and it will become clearer

Aplogies a1spark.

So long as the cables are correctly sleeved does it matter?... :|
