quick question, what type of smoke detector would be suitable for a coal fire?

It is recommended to use a HEAT detector instead in a room with a coal fire.

They don't burn too well Soulman, just stick with the coal

I have an ordinary smoke detector and a wood burning stove, and the stove has never set the smoke alarm off yet.

I suggest if you are getting a lot of smoke in the room, the design of the fire or chimney needs looking at, or lack of combustion air getting into the room.

Optical are less prone to false alarms from cooking etc if you prefer a smoke rather than a heat

You could fit a multi sensor combined optical and heat alarm. Aico do one.
