Hi as title I have a form from SP Energy networks, they are asking for a rough load (kva) of the connections I require in my garage

basically we are building an MOT station and a storage unit, both units will have 3phase brought into them.

the mot station will have 2 x ramps and an air compressor, all 3phase, 8-10 sockets, 8 6ft strip lights, gas central heating and a few other smaller things.

the storage unit will only have sockets and lighting in it.

can someone give me a rough idea of the individual load of each unit?

sorry for the vague description, and any help is welcomed

Going to need a LOT more info, than that

Size of compressor

Number of starts per hour

Assisted or DOL start

Ramp, motor size and details as above

Size of fluorescents

Are you having a ATL,for MOTing?

Is it a package?,,,if so suppliers will have details

If it is a 3ph service the minimum size is usually a bit less tha 70kVA for whole current metering. But if youmput 70 on the form they may get a bit moody

Just saying

compressor is a 4hp 400v and works upto 10 bar or 150psi

DOL start?? whats that?

as far as I know its 8 x 6ft fluorescents

no automated test lane

starts per hour for air could be upto 5

and ramps would be similar id think?

I do have a package from ramp company coming so can get full specs from them, was just looking for something like a ball park figure to send to SP to get ball rolling?

thanks for your replies folks

That is nothing.....

Got a link to the form??

john..
hi, the form is in my possession mate, don't have it online?

I would have thought 20kVA would be far far more than you need, but without seeing the exact figures

Just guessing
20kva? im confused now, did you not say 70kva would be minimum for a 3phase installation??

sorry for cinfusion

You probably only NEED 20. .....BUT the minimum they Can USUALLY give you is 70.

To put it in its simplest terms......

Your installation will most likely not "suck" More than 20......... However there will be enough out there for it to "suck" 70 if required

I use "suck"as an analogy as your installation will draw power from the supply. The supply will NOT PUSH 70 at your installation

If you see what i mean?

If you say you want 70 they may think you are running on the limit and start to request more info from you

with you now yep, thanks! so if I say 50kva that would be suffice without them worrying im going to be asking for too much?

thnaks

I think that would satisfy them to be honest .

In reality your garage lights   3Amps

Compressor  5A  intermittent  start /stop

Ramp 5A  intermittent  ( Runs for 20 seconds & stops)

You may have some electric heating in the winter which would be the higher current user.

As the others have said , I don't think they do a service less than 100A  when really a 40A  X 3phase supply would do for your garage  unless you wanted to do electric welding perhaps.

And on the subject of welding...

ANY three phase supply will be MORE than ok for any welder you are ever going to have in a garage.

I have in front of me a Miller 300A stick set, 11.7 Kva, a Lincoln 405A stick set, 34Kva and an FDB 320A MIG set, 14Kva

So, unless you are going to be running your garage AND having a few people working at the same time in the shed next door building army tanks from 2" plate, you will be fine!!!

I have never filled in the standard form, just written all the details down and taken it in and spoken to a "real" person.. Worked for me!!

john...
