Whats not to understand? Everyone seems to want to be Irish as they celebrate st paddys but not st georges. When I was at school, we used to get st andrews day off every year but I bet thats stopped now.

From what I can gather, the English are often considered bigoted and xenophobic if they celebrate their Englishness. If this is indeed true then I think that is very sad.

For those of you on here who are English, I hope you had a good day yesterday and managed to take time to reflect on your nation and feel very proud of who you are.

From WikipediaSaint George is also included in early Muslim texts as a saintly figure. One Muslim legend recounts that George lived among a group of believers who had been in direct contact with the last disciples of Jesus.[37] George is said to have been a rich merchant who opposed the erection of a statue of the pagan deity Apollo, by Dadan, the king of Mosul. After confronting the king, George was apparently tortured many times but to no effect and was imprisoned, later being aided by angels.[37] Muslim literature too depicts George as a martyr.
It seems St George is multi denominational;)

I celebrated in the age old English way ......................... Had a few pot's of ale (in to micro brewery beer at the moment), I did how ever resist the urge to don the chain mail & go on a crusade or hunt down the odd dragon.

That is my point exactly, Im from norn iron and proud to get p*ss*d on paddys day, but st George goes by mostly un-noticed, i used to live in south Manchester and paddys day was a big deal, yet i have yet to be anywhere in England where George is celebrated in any way at all really, maybe the odd pub with something on, but thats it.

Shame really, as much as I keep telling the missus that Im not massively proud of my son being English, I hope he will be, if you are not proud of who you are then what have you left?

Just my thoughts, and not being English mean one of 2 things ,

A they dont count

B an outsider looking in can often see more than those inside looking out.

Revved up Sparky is correct , we have a situation now where the English are frightened to speak their minds and so I have no shame in quoting Sir Winston Churchill for the 1000th time.

" I am a great admirer of the Scots. I am quite friendly with the Welsh. I must confess to some sentiment about old Ireland.

But there is a forgotten, nay, almost a forbidden word, which means more to me than any other.

That word is ENGLAND.

It humbled the pride of the tyrant and brought hope and succour to the oppressed .

To the lover of freedom it was the one sure rock amid shifting sands.

But today we are scarcely allowed to mention the name of our country.

Let our patriotism begin at home . It is not enough to have the name of England on our lips, we must also revive the old qualities- the old spirit . "
