I have a toshiba A500 17X quite new running windows 7. Its been great but recently started behaving strangely. When you close a page down with the red X in the corner there is a delay of up to 20 seconds before it closes?

Any ideas its really annoying!

Try looking at the Taskmanager and processes, could be some app hogging most of the CPU clock cycles

Just had a look and win ex and win messenger are the only things running
From the the sound of things something is running and hogging the processes, this can be the anti virus (Assuming you have it)?

Ok there were loads of those some small, biggest was 41mb.... Like 2 pages of processes. should I press 'end process' to all of them?
Whoah, no. Sure fire way to make things grind to a severe halt.

Make sure you've got the CPU% column up and click it, it will sort by that column. Get it to sort descending (click it again to switch asc\desc). See what is at the top and what CPU% it's using.

Soudnds somewhat odd though. Is it any program\window or certain ones?

OK CPU usage 9% physical memory 50% and processes 83sounds a lot but only 9% cpu should be OK and 4GB Ram should be plenty.
So what exactly is your PC doing?

It still seems rather busy.

I can assure you the sites I am on are things like facebook, itsyourturn.com and ebay...... nothing worth coughing aboutPerhaps I will try it in firefox?
i think lurch was asking more if its just IE or if other programs give the same problems?

Sorry, I interpreted the cough wrongly.....Just installed firefox and it shuts down straight away!
There you go then, IE is carp. Point proven. ;)

Does it do the same with anything else, or just IE?

Seems to be just ie. It was pre installed on this laptop so assumed it would be OK. Forgot it was carp.... Thanks guys.
Might be worth checking the settings on IE.
