Was asked a while ago to look (just a quick look) at property that was being bought by some one i had done work for before. he wanted old fuse board changingView attachment 665

to 17th CU. i asked him to get an isolator fitted and also for them to check earth and give me some where to connect to as it was looped for next doors too, any way isolator fitted and earth checked (apparently).this is my first incounter with a TNS so after some advice, is the earth adequate? (i dont think it is) should them clamps be used for TNS earth? and should it be me to change or DNO.

Okay.

You can`t change the clamps. DNO issue. Although OUR regs don`t permit their use; many DNOs use this method.

However, you CAN replace the cable from them, as you are not disturbing the clamp itself.

Ze is fine; just replace the cable with 10/16mm as appropriate, and all is well with the world!

the trouble is i dont think 16mm will fit round the screws on the clamp securely, then it wraps round a nut on the metal fuse carrier ,which again is quite loose, is it worth getting DNO out to sort it out properly. ive bonded gas and water with 10mm to a new earth block and 16mm from that to new CU.

what kme said^ :Applaud

you use lugs to reduce the thickness at the connection

but doesnt it have to be unbroken?
No; you`re thinking of MEBC to gas & water.

Your EC WILL be unbroked. Consider the rest of it to be "supplementart" (it isn`t; but similar idea).

One thing - check with DNO that you don`t have fused neutral in the HED! Baaaaaad

DON'T TOUCH THE EARTHS ONTO THE INCOMING CABLES!

This is a looped supply to next door, you may cut off their earth!

Report to DNO "PITCH LEAKAGE FROM METAL SERVICE CUT OUT HEAD"

They should come and replace it.

+1

Also, crimps are classed as perm joints so you can use a crimp to join to runs together with a lug if needs be but do not do it yourself.

Additionally, if you read the instructions to an earth clamp it will most likely say not to be used on cable. Just wanted to say that before people start using clamps instead of terminating SWA proper like.

^ what he says

your earth will be taken from the MET - which the the henley next to CU. there is no need to replace cable from service cable to MET. its the DNO's responsibility. and in this case, i wouldnt want to replace it anyway, since its the main earth for the next house

best thing would be as Tim says and report to DNO as leaking pitch

leaking pitch ?????? anyone care to explain please.
the box is filled with runny insulating bitumen which should harden or be contained

Presumably bitumen rather than pitch... pitch comes from trees and bitumen comes from the ground?

Or am I being pedantic?

Wet Fish

The DNOs are supposed to be getting rid of those metal cut-outs, theres one on a job I'm doing, it not connected to earth ,so could become live, and whoever rewired the place has connected his main 16mm earth to it , giving no Ze reading at all.
